A day, (as if one day is enough!) to celebrate female achievements and contributions to society through the generations.
There are so many fabulous women both now and historically who have been trailblazers and significantly contributed to society. It would be difficult to list them all, so perhaps if we look closer to home at our Mothers and Grandmothers and think about the effect they individually have had on our lives it might help. They may not have all set the world alight, but they have led the way for us.
My Mother who recently died at the age of 93, had a huge impact on my life and that of my siblings. Not just her tremendous work ethic or her ability to adapt to an everchanging world, but perhaps more importantly, to take the knocks that life threw at her. Firstly, being accepted and offered a scholarship to grammar school, but was told she couldn’t go as she had to contribute to the family’s income, going on to work in a munition’s factory during the war. Office cleaning as a young Mum ensuring she was there for us at the start & end of our school day. Finally becoming the career woman she wanted to be – a Civil Servant. In my eyes a real trailblazer who taught us to never give up on our dreams, work hard and be resilient. All traits a trailblazer possess.
So, to all the great women, including my amazing Mother and my super-talented and clever daughter, embrace International Women’s Day. Take the opportunity to stop and reflect on all the talented women you know, our influencers and trailblazers.
